Metal foils cause a known adverse reaction when mixed with hair coloring products. This reaction can break the hair being lightened in the metal foil and lead to thinning hair, especially when used under a heat source. Ammonia-based color and metal combined can produce heat, resulting in broken hair, melting, or liquefying the strands. Under a heat source, this issue worsens and can lead to permanent damage to hair or skin. Furthermore, metal foils get very hot when used under a dryer and can cause thermal burns. Salons using metal highlighting foils contribute to the staggering 195 million tons of waste in our landfills every year. Treated metal foils that have been exposed to hair color or lightening products during a hair service cannot be recycled or repurposed without toxicity, which is something we want to avoid. Since 2001, Artistex has been committed to being an environmentally sustainable salon by using non-metal foiling alternatives that are recyclable or biodegradable. At our environmentally sustainable salon, we collaborate with Green Circle Salons to re-purpose hair clippings, helping to keep our planet clean and develop better resources. Discover how: hair clippings are transformed into various humanitarian products like Hair Booms. These innovative tools absorb toxic oils from spills and illegal waste in natural water supplies, as hair naturally absorbs oils, protecting wildlife in the process. Additionally, the clippings are produced into bio-composite plastics to create items such as recycling waste bins. They are also utilized for research and development of new environmental technologies, including insulation and stormwater filtration. Knowing which bin to place waste and how to properly recycle, repurpose, or throw items into the landfill can be confusing, especially in an environmentally sustainable salon. So many rules! No worries... we have simplified it. All of our bins will be clearly labeled with the following categories and examples. If you're unsure or have an odd item, either take it with you or ask. We are happy to help!  

**Recycle Bin:** Please place only non-refundable plastic, metal, and glass bottles here.  

**Refundable Bin:** This is for water bottles, soda cans, sparkling water containers, and any drink containers made of plastic, metal, or glass that have the .5 cent or .10 cent tax.  

**Plastic Wrap Bin:** This bin is for the thin plastic wrapping of items and used to sanitize our tools. We ship our plastic wrap to Green Circle Salons for proper disposal and repurposing.  

**PPE Recovery Bin:** Please dispose of PPE masks, gloves, and disinfectant wipes here. We also ship our PPE to Green Circle Salons for responsible disposal and repurposing.  

**Landfill Bin:** This is for biodegradable items and any garbage that goes straight into our landfills. Please think before using this bin. Thank you!  

We manage these items responsibly; just so you know:  

**Chemical Waste:** Hair color, acetones, and other products used during your service should never go down the drain, as they can end up in our water supplies. Therefore, we collect them and ship our chemical waste to Green Circle Salons for proper disposal and repurposing.  

**Hair Bin:** Every time you hear the sound of our central vacuum, you hear the sound of helping the planet. We ship hair clippings to Green Circle Salons for repurposing. Consumption is inevitable. In many ways, businesses cannot avoid this, and the nature of what we do often requires it. State regulations frequently mandate it to maintain our licensing, and the costs involved influence how we conduct our business. However, how we dispose of our consumption is a choice. We choose to be responsible by partnering with Green Circle Salons to ensure environmentally sustainable salon practices. We pay to responsibly dispose of the following products and others: 

Plastic Wrap, used for sanitation purposes and PPE, is either biodegradable or repurposed into: 

- Materials used in a waste-to-energy process to create clean renewable energy that powers homes and businesses. 

- Safely incinerated; the ash can be used as filler in asphalt and construction materials like bricks. 

Hair Color Waste is repurposed into: 

- Clean energy sources, which is fantastic! 

- Separated into water and oil, where the water returns to the water supply and the oil is blended into fuel. 

Pretty remarkable, right? Every color service generates waste that, through Green Circle Salons, is transformed into clean energy.
